Vielsalm
Getting there
| Trails number 1 through 4 interconnect and overlap, starting from rue des Chasseurs Ardennais 1. The 1:25,000/1:50,000-scaled map can be purchased from Syndicat d'Initiative de Vielsalm. If you have a Belgian bank account, and have plenty of time for a simple money transfer, they can send you the map snail mail. To be noted is that when we did this, the cost (9.50 euro) was more than ordering from Brussels-based NGI (3.72 euro). Ordering from the local tourist office it turned out you also get detailed brochures with pictures of each trail along with panorama/physical/technical ratings. Your choice.
NB. Always try to encourage the effort made: Buy the trail map and help finance mountain biking in the area! I have to come back here. And not because I liked it so much, but because I didn't see enough to have a good opinion of the trails. We rode part of trail number 4, and had a really good time, but trail number 1 which took us into Vielsalm was utterly disappointing, consisting of way too much tarmac. However, as this is the shortest mountain bike loop offered, I am willing to give the area some leeway (I am such a kind person). There are too many mountain bike events here every year, and I have heard too many good comments from riders I've met to believe anything else. Trail signs are the same as for Lierneux where we stayed for a weekend in June. By Sunday when we rode into Vielsalm we had learnt to decipher them. NB. The map also covers the permanent mountain bike trails of Lierneux, trails 11-15. |
